Plans to build housing association homes on the site of council-owned garages in Drayton Street, Stanmore, Winchester, have run into a wall of hostility.

At a meeting of the Stanmore Steering group on Wednesday, residents vented their anger and frustration at the possibility of housing on the site.

Their main concern was parking, with street spaces already taken up by student parking and the nearest garages half a mile away.

In addition, people told the meeting at the Family Church Hall, Stanmore Lane, that they had not been properly consulted and claimed there had been enough infill development on the estate.

Representatives from Winchester Housing Association and the city council said there was a "dire need" with 2,000 people waiting for homes - and the site had been highlighted in a report identifying suitable locations for affordable housing.

They added that no planning application had been submitted yet and they wanted to work closely with residents.

Arthur Brown, of Stanmore Lane, said that 40% of the houses there had been sold for student accommodation, vastly increasing the number of cars"

However, Jim Cutts, who is on the Stanmore Action Group and Stanmore Steering group, said: "We have been working with the council - and sometimes against them - to look at infill. We have to be realistic - the building of affordable housing in Stanmore is going to happen."

Ward councillor, Patrick Davies, said after the meeting: "It's early days and there are so many issues to be resolved. We must make sure there is full public involvement from now on."
