A Winchester organisation giving support to vulnerable people is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.

The City Road Project, owned by Winchester Housing Association and supported by Westgate Support and Care, has nine bedsits and operates 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Manager Angela Rogan said: "We hope to be here for at least ten more years - as long as there are young people that need housing."

Since the project opened countless 16 to 24-year-olds have been given a safe home, individual and group support and preparation for living independently within the community.

Carly Scott arrived in Winchester three months ago, not knowing where she was going or where she would be sleeping.

She said: "Although my difficult circumstances made everyday life a little hard, I found Winchester's support network superb and it soon led me to the project.

"In comparison to my other hostel experiences I would say the City Road Project offers the most ongoing support.

"Phone numbers can be given, appointments can be made and the staff will even let you moan at them for half an hour if you get stuck."

Carly, 20, says she is now feeling far happier and settled about life.

"I have big dreams, big hopes and even bigger options," she said. "I find it comforting to know I am safe where I am. It's not a mansion or a five-star hotel - but it's our little palace and we love it."
