POLICE have stepped up their appeal for witnesses a week after a late-night moped accident which claimed the lives of two Southampton teenagers.
The communities of Lordshill and Millbrook are still trying to come to terms with the deaths of rider Lewis Grundy, 17, and pillion passenger Jamie Gosney, 15,
Floral tributes continue to be placed at the spot in Brownhill Way, Nursling, where the accident happened, and officers have put out
witness appeal boards.
Investigating officer PC Howard Miell, of Totton Roads Policing Unit, said he believed not everyone who had been at the scene of the accident last Friday evening had come forward.
"There are people who, for reasons best known to themselves, decided to drive around the parked cars of those who stopped to help at the scene and offer first aid. We would appeal for those people in the area immediately after the accident to come forward."
Officers working on the investigation, which has been codenamed Operation Pacific, have the names and addresses of some of the
witnesses at the scene of the crash, which happened at 11.23pm, but need others to get in touch.
"It's important that anyone who can help comes forward, no matter how small or insignificant they think the information is," he said.
Lewis, of Palm Road, Aldermoor, and Jamie, of Buttermere Close, Millbrook, died instantly when their moped was in collision with a Volkswagen Golf as they travelled from the M271 roundabout towards the junction of Redbridge Lane.
The rider of a second moped who was with the pair at the time is currently helping police with their inquiries.
Police expect to speak to the 28-year-old driver of the Volkswagen Golf, from Totton, in the next few days when they have the investigations team's results. He suffered minor injuries and severe shock in the accident.
Neither Lewis, a former pupil at Oaklands Community School, and Jamie, a pupil at Millbrook Community School, were wearing crash helmets at the time of the accident.
The results of toxicology tests are due to be revealed at the inquest into the teenagers' deaths.
Anyone with information about the accident is urged to contact Totton Police Station's Road Policing Unit on 0845 045 4545.
