A COLLECTION is being organised at a school in Southampton to raise money for a memorial wreath for a former pupil killed last week in a moped accident.

The school council at Oaklands Community School in Lordshill has come with the idea as a way of paying their respects to Lewis Grundy.

Lewis, 17, left the 705-pupil school in June 2003 and went on to work as a painter and decorator. Two younger brothers are still at the school preparing for their final exams. Liam is in Year ten and Lloyd in Year eleven.

Head teacher Dr Peter Hollis said Lewis was well remembered by pupils and staff.

"Lewis could be a very charming boy and it is very important that we remember him in this way," he said.

Many pupils are expected to attend the funeral at Hollybrook Cemetery Chapel next Thursday.

A minute's silence will also be held at the school in Fairisle Road at midday on the day of the funeral.

Lewis, who lived with his father, Richard, in Palm Road, Aldermoor, died instantly after the moped he was riding was in collision with a Volkswagen Golf in Brownhill Way, Nursling, on Friday night.

His pillion passenger Jamie Gosney, 15, also died. The accident happened as they were travelling from the M271 roundabout towards the junction with Redlands Lane at 11.23pm.

A memorial service was being held today at Millbrook Community School where Jamie of Buttermere Close, Millbrook, was a pupil.

Jamie's funeral service is to be held on Tuesday at St Peter's Church in Maybush at 11.30am.

The burial will take place at Hollybrook Cemetery at 12.30pm.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who saw the teenage friends on their moped and a second moped riding alongside them to come forward.
