FAMILY and friends have created a shrine to the memory of two teenagers killed in a road accident at Nursling.

Hundreds of floral tributes and cards have been placed at the spot where 15-year-old Jamie Gosney and Lewis Grundy, 17, lost their lives last Friday night.

Their moped was involved in a crash with a Volkswagen Golf at the junction of Brownhill Way and Redbridge Lane. It's not known who was at the moped's controls at the time.

Neither was wearing crash helmets at the time.

Both lived in Southampton. Another moped rider who was with Jamie and Lewis rode off after the crash. He has since been spoken to by specialist police officers investigating the tragedy. The unnamed rider's moped was seized by the crash investigating team.

Jamie was a pupil at Southampton's Millbrook Community School and Lewis was a painter and decorator.

PC Howard Miell, from Totton roads policing unit, stressed the need to wear protective clothing and crash helmets when riding a motorcycle.

"People must remember they are not as protected on a motorbike as in a car. There is no protective bubble around them. It is the young riders that we have got to get this message across to," said the officer.

Forensic officers are carrying out test on the moped and the teenagers' clothing in a bid to establish who was at the controls when the accident happened.

A 28 year-old Totton man who was driving the Volkswagen suffered minor injuries but is still in a state of severe shock, said PC Miell. Officers hope to interview him when he's well enough.

He was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment and later allowed home.

Post-mortems were carried out on Jamie and Lewis on Monday. Inquests into their deaths have yet to be opened. Seven people died on Hampshire's road within as many days. And the head of Hampshire's roads policing unit warned the force would pull out all the stops in a bid to prevent further road tragedies

Superintendent Mark Bradford said: "To have seven people die on Hampshire's roads in one week is completely unacceptable.

"These latest fatalities have devastated the lives of many families across the area and created chaos and carnage on our roads and this will not be tolerated.

"Anyone who drives dangerously, inappropriately or at excessive speed will be dealt with in a robust and appropriate manner."

Anyone who has information about this incident is asked to contact Hampshire's road policing unit at Totton on 0845 045 45 45 and ask for the Operation Pacific team.
