REGULAR Gazette Newspapers readers will know about Mike Bowler's superlative fundraising efforts on behalf of Daniel Bowler's Memorial Trust Fund, named after his young son, who tragically died from cancer.
Mike has temporarily channelled his energies in another direction. Between 11am and 3pm, this Saturday, he has organised a jumble sale and collection point at the Oakridge Hall for All in aid of the Asian Tsunami Appeal. For details, please contact Michaela Riley on 01256 335882.
I admire Mike greatly and unreservedly support his efforts. The Tsunami Appeal is a thoroughly worthwhile cause. The occasion deserves to be well-supported. Please call in, if you can.
UNTIL relatively recently, Marnel Junior School has had problems. I recall a crisis visit a few years ago. Discipline and staff morale had collapsed and leadership was in short supply. What a remarkable change I noticed when I returned last Friday.
Capital expenditure and voluntary effort have transformed the premises beyond recognition. The children are smartly dressed, polite and motivated. The commitment and dedication of a largely new teaching staff are self-evident.
New headteacher Alison Baron and her team, admirably supported by the governors, are achieving miracles. They are implementing the timeless principles of pursuing excellence and rewarding endeavour - and, in the process, transforming the school.
DO you know of a community centre, local sports club, after school club or similar organisation which could benefit from a face-lift?
