VETERAN marksman Jason Lovell rolled back the years with a four-goal salvo for Brockenhurst last night as basement boys Downton were buried 6-1 at Grigg Lane.

It was the first time 'Shovel' had netted four in one game since his Wimborne Town hey-day of 1994, and his last hat-trick was in 1999.

Admiring player-manager Graham Kemp said: "Jase's first two goals were headers and the second one, in particular, was textbook.

"He was being man-marked by Mark Savage, who's no slouch, but he gets up so early and powers it in."

Paul White opened the scoring for Brock after being relieved of the captaincy.

Kemp explained: "Chalky's had a lot of weight on his shoulders and I wanted him to concentrate on his own game. It worked because he had a new lease of life and had his best game for two months.

"I offered the captaincy to Jason Lovell, but he turned it down, so I took it on myself. As manager I'm used to the responsibility anyway."

Lovell scored twice more in the second half, once from the penalty spot, and Dave Midgley was also on target for the buoyant Badgers.

Kemp smiled: "It's our biggest win for two years but, to be fair to Downton, they missed a penalty at 0-0 and it was quite tight for half an hour. But we scored two in five minutes before half-time and never looked back.

"My only complaint is that we didn't keep a clean sheet. We switched off at a corner."

In the other Division 1 fixture, Nicky Wyatt and Sean Wain clinched Moneyfields a 2-0 home win over Cowes Sports.
