Alan Mullally is backing England to win the fifth Test against South Africa - but he has mixed memories of the last time England played at Centurion Park, Pretoria.

Five years ago, the first three days of the Pretoria Test were lost to rain but England won a thriller by two wickets, with last man Mullally taking 2-42 before watching Darren Gough and Chris Silverwood knock off the winning runs.

Within a few months Mullally's former Leicestershire teammate, Hansie Cronje, pictured below, was found guilty of match fixing.

And, before Cronje's death three years ago, it transpired that the South Africa skipper had been given money and a leather jacket to determine the result of England's last Test in Pretoria.

Mullally said: "It was only my second Test of the series because I had damaged my ribs in the first match but it will be remembered for being one of the games that Hansie took money to influence.

"At the time we thought it was a good idea to manufacture a result because South Africa had already won the series and there was a crowd that had paid money to be entertained.

"Both sides forfeited their first innings and it was a good contest. Four or five of us were padded up ready to go in at one point and I was the only one that didn't get to bat.

"We enjoyed the victory but it came as a total shock when Hansie was found guilty of match fixing.

"He was one of the hardest-working and most dedicated cricketers I ever played with.

"He loved his money but I've always said that whoever is without sin should cast the first stone - no one's perfect."
