A GROUP of Chandler's Ford Christians has helped create a haven in one of the most impoverished corners of the world.

The 12-strong party has just returned from Kenya where it saw how its generous work has brought joy to the young residents of the St Stephen's Children's Home.

After two years of fundraising the group, led by the Rev Maz Allen of Chandler's Ford United Reformed Church, was able to pay for a community room to be built.

The children had dormitories and a dining room but no place to relax, play games or watch television.

Thanks to the fundraisers they now they have a community room.

Rev Allen said: "Our group was thrilled with the quality of the construction and got to work with paintbrushes and sewing machines to make the interior look attractive.

"We had taken games, toys and videos with us and Chandler's Ford Infant School had made three wall hangings."

The church group was also able to give St Stephen's enough cash to buy a plot of land next to the home where their animals - a pig, a cow and two goats - will be re-housed.

The church group raised £11,500 over two years from various events.

The church group also visited Mugumo Primary School which has links with Scantabout Primary School in Chandler's Ford.
