A GRANDFATHER-of-11 who got on his bike to raise cash for tsunami victims in south-east Asia has collected more than £880 for the relief effort.

Colm O'Driscoll, 70, cycled 40 miles from his Shirley home to New Milton and back in a bid to help those recovering from the Boxing Day tragedy.

He said: "I was very pleased with how much I managed to raise.

I didn't expect my cycle ride to generate so much interest. Everybody was very generous."

Mr O'Driscoll, who lives in a retirement home in Oakley Road, persuaded his neighbours and church friends to sponsor his ambitious ride.

He took five hours to complete the round trip, which was not the first time he has taken part in a sponsored event to raise money for good causes.

Over the years the pedalling pensioner has collected more than £1,500 to support Iranian earthquake victims and an orphanage in Peru by completing bike rides and rowing challenges.

Mr O'Driscoll says he is able to take part in the physical fundraisers because he eats a sensible diet and looks after himself. He keeps fit by going to the gym once or twice a week, walking a neighbour's dog and riding his bike.

The former Southampton docks worker added: "I believe God has blessed me with good health and I wanted to do something to help while I'm still fit.

"I think my friends and family were quite chuffed that I was doing the bike ride at my age."
