THE generous people of Southampton have raised more than £4,000 to help the tsunami victims after the city's Rotary Club held a street collection.
People dug deep, emptying their purses into the collecting buckets of the Rotary Club of Southampton, who were collecting in WestQuay.
With the help of a jazz band made up of members of the Musicians Union, a total of £4,378 was raised to pay for Rotary shelter boxes that provide a tent for ten people, sleeping bags, tools, cooking utensils and water purification tablets.
President of the club John Caldwell said he was touched by the generosity shown.
He said: "People on the street are still giving generously and particularly the youngsters.
"They were donating their pocket money, in many instances having already been involved in collections at their schools or having organised collections themselves."
