New Forest residents are being urged to put their best foot forward and stride towards a healthier future.

Three organisations have joined forces to provide Ringwood with four specially designated walks aiming to create fitter families.

Local councillors, NHS representatives and Hampshire County Council staff gathered to launch the routes, which take the walker between 25-45 minutes.

They have been devised by the county council, New Forest District Council and New Forest Primary Care Trust.

Leaflets advertising the walks are available from Ringwood Library and the Corn-erways Medical Centre in Gorley Road.

The routes include some of Ringwood's best known landmarks, including Trinity Church, the Market Place, Jubilee Column and the old railway - now a footpath and cycleway known as the Castleman Trail.

Experts say people need to take at least 10,000 steps a day to stay fit.

John Waddington, the county council's executive member for recreation, said: "This is also an excellent opportunity for people to get out and explore their local communities."
