Lymington's Ryan James is being touted as a rider with a real future in the sport.

James, of the Primera Racing Team, has been making a name for himself in the winter league at the Calshot velodrome.

James has come to track cycling from triathlon and has certainly found a finishing kick since taking up the sport.

He has also mastered the tactic of hanging at the back of the group, letting his opponents wear themselves out and then pushing for the line with his lightning quick finish. It paid off in both the 28-lap scratch race and the match sprint.

Hythe's Nick O'Hara (Sotonia CC) pushed James close in the opening scratch race and came away with placings in the points race and sprint to maintain third overall.

In the 'unknown distance', a confident James rode from the front and wound up the pace to a level where none of his competitors could get close.

His performances moved him to second overall in the A League and he goes into the final three rounds one point behind Bournemouth's John Marriner.

The Calshot league has been responsible for bringing many talented youngsters to the fore - such as William Couch of Fordingbridge (Bournemouth Arrow Cycling Club), who had three wins and a runner-up slot to maintain his position as series leader, and Fareham's Jaqui Marshall, a member of the Great Britain squad who has raced at the last two rounds of the UCI track World Cup.

At the lastest round in Manchester, Marshall lined up alongside the world's best in the 10km scratch.

After a strong performance in the qualification, she faded slightly in the final, still finishing in a credible 16th place.
