A KIND-HEARTED schoolboy made a splash when he completed a sponsored swim in aid of the Daily Echo-backed Southampton Council of Faiths' tsunami appeal.

Russell Hack, 11, raised more than £400 by swimming 100 lengths at the city's Quays Swimming and Diving Complex for those trying desperately to recover from the world's biggest natural disaster in living memory.

He said: "I saw a programme about what was happening and I was amazed.

"I asked my mum if I could do something to help and that's why I did it."

The Bellemoor School pupil has always been a water baby and, aged just one-and-a-half, was featured in the Daily Echo when he collected £400 in a sponsored swim to help fund a cousin's mercy mission to Romania.

The toddler swam three lengths of Totton Recreation Centre swimming pool and jumped in the pool seven times to raise money for aid work at a Bucharest orphanage.

This time, Russell faced a greater challenge by swimming one-and-a-half

miles.

Staff at the Quays allowed Russell to train for the event free of charge, with duty manager Mark Snow counting off the lengths during the swim last Friday.

Mum Donna said: "It's really nice that everyone has been so supportive and generous.

"I think it's good that Russell wanted to do what he could to help.

"It's brilliant that youngsters feel so strongly about what's happened."
