Marks just off The Needles continue to produce some excellent cod as Rob Bird and Steve McEvoy from Winchester discovered.

Bird was the first to strike when a 19-pounder picked up his double squid bait presented on a pennel rig. Not to be outdone, McEvoy then struck into a beauty which pushed the scales down to 26lb.

A junior angler once again stole the show during a Southampton SAC club fixture at Mayflower Park where young Aiden Taylor bagged the day's heaviest fish, a 2lb 5oz flounder.

The fixture attracted 34 members including 12 youngsters, with 14 returning 34 fish to the scales. The senior event was won by John Brown with five fish worth 173 points, followed by Bill Barnes 159, Mike Taylor 108 and Gurmid Ladher 73 points. The junior section was won by Jay Ladher with four flatties worth 130 points followed by Aiden Taylor 43, Ross Bayley 37 and Jamie Barnes with 35 points.

There was plenty of local interest during the first round of the Isac Pegged Open League, which had to be switched from the Masonic section of Chesil to Preston because of gale forecast winds and a very heavy sea.

Despite the conditions, the 81 competitors who braved the elements returned a fair catch of 67 dogfish, eight flounders, one red mullet, three pollack and 15 whiting.

The night's heaviest fish, a 2lb 1oz dogfish, was bagged by Colin Richards, while Rob Marshall caught a 10.75oz red mullet, which is an unusual visitor for the time of year.

Overall winner was former youth world champion Daniel Mogridge from Fareham. The 21-year-old wielder recorded sever doggies weighing 7lb 11.75oz.

The runner-up in D section was Ian Golds from Portsmouth with 4lb 1.75oz, followed by Tony Hatchard 3lb 14oz and Colin Richards with 3lb 9.75oz.

Darren Phillips from Andover was the top performer in C section with 5lb 5.25oz, ahead of Lee Cullen from Netley 2lb 9.75oz and Darren Smith with 2lb 9oz.

Ben Stockley won B section with 4lb 3.75oz to nudge out Tony McDonald 3lb 0.75oz, Pete Hegg 2lb 15.25oz and Adrian Ryder from Southampton with 2lb 11.75oz.

Steve Harder from Havant won the final section with 5lb 5.8oz to get the better of Rob Marshall 5lb 1oz, John Van Crugten 4lb 12.25oz and Mike Taylor from Southampton with 3lb 0.25oz.

The ALS Open staged at Weston Shore was dominated by flounders, with Bill Pinky recording the day's heaviest fish at 1lb 13oz.

England youth team member Lee Cullen from Netley won the event with five flatties worth 178 points, followed by Andy Rogers also with five fish worth 166 points.

Sam Deathe, a former England junior team member, was third with four fish worth 127 points to get the better of his dad Steve, who finished with a trio of flatties worth 106 points.

One of the heaviest flounders recorded from Wessex waters has been caught by Phillip Dawson while fishing from his own small boat "Fishon" while in the confines of Poole Harbour.

The 52-year-old bosun was float fishing with a lightweight outfit when he caught the huge specimen, which weighed 5lb 3oz. Unfortunately Dawson does not belong to any clubs so he could not claim the local record.

The first round of the Allan's Marine Super League series was staged at Lee-on-the-Solent, where dogfish, pout and rockling were in abundance.

Duncan Beck ran out winner with six fish weighing 4lb 1oz to nudge out Dave Jones and 3lb 8oz and Andy Smithson with 3lb 7oz.

The penultimate round of the Wessex Senior Flounder League held at Baiter saw Alan Rogerson successful from the golden peg.

The event attracted 61 competitors and Brian Fisk was just quarter of an ounce further adrift for second place. Bob Cattle was third with 4lb 13oz.

All eyes will be set on the stretch of shoreline running between the Rolling Mills Jetty and Hamble on Sunday where Ford Sports SAC, in conjunction with the Meon Valley Lions Club, stage their Charity Open Shore Competition, which is being sponsored by the Ford branch of the Transport and Workers Union.

The huge event, which could attract up to 400 competitors, has a £500 top prize.
