HEADHUNTERS have been called in to unearth a new boss for WestQuay shopping centre owners Hammerson.

Current chairman Ron Spinney has been involved with Hammerson, Britain's third largest quoted property company, for more than ten years, but is to step down later this year.

He had an instrumental role in restoring the £2.4 billion company to calm waters after a rocky period triggered by a drop in worldwide property values.

Four years ago he stepped up to become non-executive chairman, with the chief executive role being filled by John Richards.

A number of external candidates are being considered to replace him, with some reports naming Hammerson non-executive director John Nelson as a frontrunner.

Mr Nelson was formerly chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston and is currently a deputy chairman of B&Q owners Kingfisher and is on the board of BT.

As previously reported in the Daily Echo, Hammerson recently bought the remaining share of WestQuay from Barclays Bank and is now the sole owner of the site.
