Hampshire's Justin Rose was in great shape after the first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii.
The 24-year-old from Fleet shot a first round 67 to lie just one shot off a four-way tie for the lead.
With a stiff breeze blowing off the Pacific, scoring wasn't easy, but Rose managed five birdies in his three-under-par total.
In his first event of what will be a full programme of USPGA events in 2005, Rose began at the tenth and was two under after collecting birdies at the 12th and 18th. He gave a shot back at the tricky first, but moved to three under when he picked up birdies at the third and fourth.
Rose bogeyed the eighth but took a birdie chance at the par five ninth to finish three under and in a share of fifth place, comfortably the best of a sizeable British contingent.
