EVERY curry restaurant in Southampton is set to get involved in a massive fundraising effort for the victims of the tsunami disaster.

Members of Southampton's Bangladeshi community have pledged to organise a one-off Asian fundraiser in aid of the disaster appeal.

The committee of Bangladeshi community group BJS UK Southampton got together to make a decision on how they could help.

One of the ideas for their fundraiser is for Indian restaurant owners to pledge their takings for one night on a date yet to be decided in February.

Organisers believe that could boost charity coffers by between £5,000 and £10,000.

To give the night an extra special flavour, representatives of the British Embassies of the two worst affected countries are to be invited along. All money raised would then be sent to help victims in Indonesia or Sri Lanka.

Mohammod Sattar, committee secretary for the group, said the disaster has special meaning for their people because of the floods which regularly devastate low-lying Bangladesh.

He said: "Worldwide everybody helps Bangladesh when it is hit by floods. Now is our time to show that if it comes to it, we will do whatever we can."

"We know they will need help for many years to come so we wanted to do our bit."

"Everyone seemed really interested in the idea and we hope that interest will continue."

Two people were killed in Bangladesh in the international port city of Chittagong.
