ADAM Tidby bowed out of the World Bowls Tour Indoor Singles Championship £1,500 richer and with his reputation enhanced.

Playing in such exalted company for the first time, the Hampshire skip caused a first-round upset by outgunning world number 21 Neil Furman from America 9-3 9-5 at the Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk.

In qualifying for Potters, Tidby earned £750, and he doubled his money by winning - although the England international met his match in the second round against Welsh star John Price, the 1990 world champion and the tournament's eighth seed.

Price captured the opening set 11-0 yet that lop-sided scoreline does no justice to Tidby, who played well without getting the breaks. The second set was a different affair, with Price edging it 5-3 until a splendid full house put Tidby 7-5 ahead.

But the East Dorset club member could not force a tie-break as Price fought back to secure a 7-7 draw to book his place in the next round.
