AFC Newbury powered their way into the last eight of the Wessex League Cup with a convincing 5-2 victory at Division 2 promotion hopefuls Romsey Town last night.

The Berkshire side got off to the perfect start when Lance Spencer cut in from the left to fire his side into a second minute lead that they doubled in the 35th minute with a close-range finish from Ryan Williams, writes DEREK HAWKINS.

A scorching 25-yard effort by Dean Honan put Romsey on the comeback trial after 39 minutes but, just four minutes later, Williams' 18-yard strike restored Newbury's two-goal cushion.

Daniel Mattingley played the ball across the face of goal for Lee Chudy to notch a fourth after 48 minutes with substitute Jeremy Newton, returning from a hernia injury, completing Newbury's nap hand on 76 minutes.

Dean Constable bagged Romsey's second after 85 minutes but Guy Whittingham's side progress through to the quarter finals where they now face Gosport Borough.

l In Division 2, Poole Town strengthened their grip on second spot with a comprehensive 4-0 win against Andover New Street.

Gary Funnell missed an early opening for Poole before 17-year-old Carl Chivers gave the Dolphins the lead midway through the first half.

The promising teenager bagged a second right on half time after Aaron Turner's shot had hit the crossbar.

Funnell blasted home his 20th goal of the season ten minutes from time and a brilliant solo effort by Turner in the final minute saw him beat three defenders before slotting the ball past the keeper.

Poole boss Tommy Killick has also sharpened up his attack as they push for promotion to Division 1 by signing striker Richard Glenister.

The former Bournemouth Poppies striker scored 31 goals in 29 games for the Dolphins when he was at the Tatnum Ground three seasons ago.

AFC Aldermaston hauled themselves off the foot of the table with a 3-1 victory over Amesbury Town.

Barry Smith struck after two minutes for the home side.

And, although Gavin Richards levelled for Amesbury midway through the half, Smith netted again on 35 minutes to restore Aldermaston's advantage.

Victory was confirmed for the home side in the final minute when substitute Richard Doe crossed for Kevin Hill to slot home and lift the Berkshire club above Fawley on goal difference.
