Team Southampton's Angus Maclean lived up to his pre-race favourite's tag to cruise to victory in Sunday's Stubbington 10K.

But the news was not so good for one of the area's leading women's runners, Kath Bailey, who missed out on competing because she didn't get her entry in on time.

The organisers were so inundated with entries that the race was full three weeks before the official entry deadline.

Not only did it leave Bailey, Havant AC's former British half-marathon champion, high and dry, but it left a lot of clubs without full teams to field in round five of the Hampshire Road Race League, which was run in conjunction with the main event.

Denmead Striders took advantage to make it five wins out of five in the men's section of the Hampshire RRL, ahead of host club Stubbington Green and third-place Southampton Running Club, who were led home by Paul Buckley in 11th place (34.17).

In the ladies' event, Southampton RC followed up second place in the Hampshire Cross-Country Championships less than 24 hours earlier by snatching victory over Winchester & District to strengthen their hold on second place in the League.

Medical student Maclean, an accomplished 800/1500-metres track international, won the race with ease in 30 minutes and 46 seconds - a healthy 27 seconds clear of Alton's Toby Lambert.

In Bailey's absence, the women's honours went to Liz Hartney of Reading Road Runners, who finished five seconds ahead of Southampton RC's Kay Harwood in 37.11.

A handful of Southampton RC runners were rewarded with personal best times - Mark Pickin, Simon Ridley, Jim Bennett, Alice Neal and Fiona Walkbridge.

The Hampshire Road Race League now takes a rest until March 6 at the Mad March Hare 20-mile race. The following week (March 13) comes the B&Q Eastleigh 10K.
