A HAMPSHIRE family has been left devastated after a mother and daughter were killed in a car crash.

Wendy Hobbs, 61, top picture, had been spending Christmas and new year with her daughter Vicky Keel, 39, bottom picture, when their car was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry.

Both women were killed instantly.

Mrs Hobbs had been spending the holidays with Mrs Keel, her younger daughter, and was due to return to her home in Millbrook, Southampton, last week.

Katrina Dawes, Mrs Hobbs' elder daughter and Mrs Keel's sister described the pair as sharing the same bubbly character, but added: "The family is devastated."

Mrs Keel was driving the Daewoo car when the accident happened on the A1077 in Scunthorpe, where she moved to 18 months ago.

Police said it was unclear what caused the collision at midday on Saturday but a spokesman said that the area had suffered from "atrocious weather conditions".

Katrina Dawes, Mrs Hobbs' elder daughter and Mrs Keel's sister, today spoke of how the tragedy had shattered her family.

She said: "It was such a shock we are obviously completely devastated."

She described Vicky and Wendy as having the same bubbly and lively character and sense of humour.

"In some ways it is a comfort that they both went together. They wouldn't know what to do without each other because they were so close. They shared something special."

Mrs Hobbs, of Thirlmere Road, who was married to her husband Bill, 70, for 27 years, was well known in the community particularly at her local Gala bingo club in Lordshill.

The grandmother-of-four was also a regular member of the darts team at the Ice House pub in Warren Avenue, Shirley.

Mrs Dawes, 40, of Chandler's Ford, said: "She was always winning at bingo, she was very jammy like that. She absolutely loved her bingo and her darts. She loved to play and was quite good at it too."

Mrs Keel moved to Scunthorpe, where the family were from originally, with her husband Pete and son Remmie. She was also a well known figure in the Millbrook community having worked as a dinner lady and before that for the Daily Echo's classified motors section.

Neighbour and long-term friend of the family June Sheath said: "It is so tragic and very sad. Wendy was a very good friend to me and Vicky was a lovely person, it is so sad and such a shock."

Funeral arrangements have yet to be made by the family.
