TRAVELLERS have set up an illegal campsite next to a Winch-ester nature reserve for the second time in a couple of months.

Makeshift tents and bits of plastic litter the land near Winnall Moors, while piles of rubbish and even an old armchair have also been dumped.

Nearby residents say the campers have created an eyesore just metres away from what is supposed to be one of the city's beauty spots.

Those using the site are thought to be the same group raided by the police in a drugs bust late last year. They had set up camp just yards away from their current home.

At the time of the bust, four people were living on the site along with three dogs, though no illegal substances were found.

Now people using the reserve are demanding Winchester City Council take action over the encampment and clear up the mess those using the camp have made.

One of those concerned is Sarah Granger, 34, a single mum from nearby Gordon Road.

She said: "I walk my dog along here every day after taking my daughter to school and I think the camp is a disgrace.

"Whether it's actually on the nature reserve or not, somebody should be doing something about this mess. I'm sure it

gives a terrible impression to visitors to the city."

Robert Bridge, 40, a teacher, of Water Lane, agreed. He said: "It's been here for some time now but it's steadily getting worse. I think it's disgusting.

"I don't have a problem with people living alternative lives, but these people are just ruining the area and clearly have no respect for nature or other people using the reserve."

A spokesman for Winchester City Council said: "We are aware of the situation, and we are dealing with it. We do know that they have moved further back and understand it to be the same people. They are still on our land.

"Our legal team are now considering what action to take and a decision on the matter is expected soon."
