Quality outshone quantity during the Lymington & District SFC annual flounder open shore competition from the Lymington & Pennington Sea Wall - producing three specimen size fish.

Andover's Mick Chilton landed the day's heaviest flattie which weighed 2lb 11oz. It was followed by 2lb 8.25oz fish from Adrian Smith, a member of the host club, while Mark Mondon from Hythe landed one at 2lb 8oz.

Dave Downer, from Netley Marsh, collected the £250 top prize after beaching a pair of flatties at 3lb 4oz.

The runner-up was Glyn Short from Ringwood. The 54-year-old engineer used ragworm to temp a brace of flatties weighing 2lb 15.75oz.

The pairs section was won by Terry Smith and Glyn Short with a combined weight of 5lb 7.75oz for a clear victory over P Currie and L Davies with 2lb 13.75oz.

The junior section was won by 14-year-old Ashley Collett from Lymington with a solitary flattie weighing 1lb 3.75oz.

Five-year-old Jay Cotton stole the show when the Southampton club staged a shore competition at Weston where the youngster, who attends Bitterne Park Infants School, landed the day's heaviest fish - a flounder weighing 1lb 10oz.

Jamie Barnes, another up-and-coming youngster also got amongst the fish when he landed a trio of flatties.

Bill Baynes won the event with four fish worth 131 points, in third position was Arthur Swanborough with three fish worth 93 points then Gary Sharman who also landed three flatties worth 92 points.

The final round of the Gale Force League was staged at Abbotsbury where whiting, dogfish, pouting and poor cod supplied some lively action.

Local ace John van Crugten won A section with 13lb 4.5oz followed by Malcolm Stote from Lymington with 12lb 12.5oz and Lee Cullen from Netley with 12lb 1oz.

Rob Marshall was the top performer in B section with 13lb 7.5oz ahead of Ben Stockley 9lb 8.25oz and the Phil Billins with 5lb 8.5oz.

The overall series winner, which came down to count back on weight, was van Crugten with 182 points followed by Rob Marshall 182, Malcolm Stote 178, Dave Lane 178, Lee Cullen 173 and Ben Stockley with 170 points.

The prize for the heaviest fish of the series was won by Dave Lane with a 15lb 4oz.

A brace of flounders weighing 2lb 8oz was more than enough to secure a victory for Kevin Painter during the Stamshaw Lake AC hangover open shore competition while fishing A section.

The runner-up who was in the same section was Kevin Wearn with two flatties weighing 2lb 2.5oz.

All eyes will be on the shores of Poole Harbour on Sunday when Bournemouth & District SAA stage their pegged open at Baiter, Hamworthy Park and Rockley, with fishing from 9am-2pm.

Tickets are £10 plus a £1 pool for the heaviest fish. The match will be limited to 110 competitors and pre-book facilities and full details are available from Wessex Angling Centre on 01202 668244.

A £500 top prize is on offer when Ford Sports SAC, in conjunction with the Meon Valley Lions Club, stage their open charity beach competition at Weston Shore on January 23. Details in next week's column.
