THE hunt is on for London Marathon runners to help fund Southampton's new cancer support and information centre.

Macmillan Cancer Relief has issued an appeal for runners from south Hampshire who already have a place in the 2005 Flora London Marathon but have not yet attached themselves to a particular cause.

The charity, which is currently building a £1m cancer support and information centre at Southampton General Hospital, promises to give its full support to anyone who agrees to run to help local people living with cancer.

Appeal manager Connie McConachie, pictured right, said: "We are looking for runners who would like to become part of Team Macmillan and help raise funds for our local appeal.

"As part of the team, we will kit you out in our famous green running colours, provide you with fundraising advice and training techniques, and have masseurs ready at the finish to help you get your strength back.

"You'll also be able to join in with a special pasta party held the night before the race."

The Daily Echo-backed Macmillan Appeal for South Hampshire has already hit the half way mark and building work is well under way.

When completed, the centre will have a range of literature, Internet access, counselling, benefits advice and complementary therapies.

It will provide emotional support and practical advice for anyone affected by cancer, with friends and family members as welcome as sufferers themselves.

Connie added: "Having the support and encouragement of fellow teammates, knowing you're tackling the challenge together for those who face a harder challenge every day helps give you the strength you need to get to the finish line.

"For every mile you cover, you'll know the money you raise will go even further to help local people living with cancer."

The closing date for the Flora London Marathon has already passed but anyone already registered is urged to contact Vanessa Eden at Macmillan's south Hampshire appeal office on 023 8023 6367.
