A GROUP of Southampton residents made sure their neighbourhood got off to a sparkling 2005 by holding a community clean-up.
The marathon effort in Maybush was organised by the tenants' association at William Macleod Way and Barters Close, with help from Southampton City Council's neighbourhood wardens.
Aimed at encouraging local people to take pride in their neighbourhood, the post-Christmas clean-up also provided fun for all the family.
Neighbourhood wardens worked at clearing large items of bulky rubbish and removing graffiti, while residents helped pick up litter.
Local shops including Martin's and the Co-op donated prizes for children who took part in the spruce-up.
Tenants' association chairman Debbie Edwards, who lives in William Macleod Way, said: "The clean-up was a way of getting the whole community to work together to create a better environment.
"Hopefully it encouraged everyone who lives locally to take a pride in their neighbourhood. We are very grateful to the neighbourhood wardens and the council for all their support."
