Villagers expecting Christmas money and presents through the post could be disappointed.

A mailbag was stolen from outside the post office in Twyford near Winchester at around 10am on Tuesday.

The Royal Mail says it will cover any losses for customers who used recorded delivery or other special services. The news is not so good for those using regular postage, who may not receive a penny.

The theft occurred after a postman collected Twyford's mail from the sorting office at Winnall in Winchester. On arriving in the village, he took some letters into the post office, and dropped the mailbag outside. While he was indoors, the bag was stolen.

Royal Mail spokesman, Richard Hall, said it was likely that it contained several hundred letters and parcels.

He added that the firm took the security of deliveries very seriously. He said the postman involved would be interviewed by bosses, but it was too early to say if disciplinary action would be taken.

Mr Hall advised anyone in Twyford who believes that their mail might have been stolen to speak to the senders first. Residents should only become suspicious if an item has been sent, and then fails to arrive within several days, he said.

Anyone who believes their mail has been stolen should call Royal Mail on 08457 740740, or write to Royal Mail Customer Services, Freepost, RM1 1AA.

Mr Hall warned that while customers who used recorded delivery and other special services could be reimbursed, others may not fare so well. "We always advise people not to send cash through the regular post, and no compensation is available."

He advised anyone who believes that a cheque they sent is amongst the stolen mail to contact their bank.

Police are now investigating the theft of the mailbag. Mr Hall said if the letters and parcels were found, then they would be delivered as soon as possible.
