HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE assistant manager Shaun Gale was disappointed after watching his side throw away two Conference South points in a 1-1 draw at Sussex rivals Bognor Regis Town.

"It sounds obvious but we should have kept a clean sheet after taking the lead," sighed Gale who is standing in for manager Ian Baird who missed the game because he had a pre-planned Christmas break in New York.

"It wasn't pretty at times but there were lots of things happening in the game - even the referee had to go off injured and they had to fish someone out of the crowd to run the line!

"We did do the job that we set out to do - apart from their goal. We defended it poorly and it has cost us two points, although it was probably a fair result in the end," added Gale.

The Hawks had looked set for three much-needed points after taking a seventh-minute lead when Tom Jordan flicked on a long throw by Robbie Pethick and David Town spun to fire home.

Bognor equalised around the hour mark when Havant failed to deal with a long ball played over the top of their defence.

Maidenhead, who began the day rock bottom, turned the Conference South table on its head when they beat second-placed Basingstoke Town 1-0 at the Camrose Ground.

"It's very disappointing and we've missed a great chance today," reflected Town's assistant manager Pete Peters. "The pitch was very slippery and hard but it was the same for both teams and for all our huff and puff we never really liked pulling it back, although Neville Stamp did bring a good save from their keeper.

"Once they had taken the lead they got lots of bodies behind the ball and all credit to them as they defended well but it's an opportunity lost for us."
