NEWPORT IoW boss John Linington was the happier of the two managers despite seeing the Islanders fritter away a 2-0 lead in a 2-2 Ryman League Division 1 draw with Bashley at the Recreation Ground.

"We worked well and hard today so, yes, I'm pleased with the point - although it would have been nice to pick up all three having been 2-0 up in the first half," said the Islanders' manager.

Newport took the lead after ten minutes when a well-worked move ended with Adam Barsdell's cross-cum-shot being deflected into the net.

There was no doubt about their second goal after 30 minutes, Mark Fletcher's throw-in finding Barsdell, who took a touch before smashing the ball past the keeper.

Andy Culliford reduced the arrears just before half-time and Bash grabbed their equaliser on 70 minutes after good work by Steve Strong saw him pick out Culliford who knocked the ball back for Richard Gillespie to score with a brave header.

Bash boss Geoff Butler stormed: "We were awful and didn't play for the first 20-25 minutes.

"Players were just going through the motions and that's not something that I'm going to put up with at this club.

"We are so wasteful of chances at the moment.

"We don't do the right things at the right time and we don't look tight at the back. We're just not performing."

Fleet Town's home game with Leatherhead was postponed because of the frozen pitch at Calthorpe Park.

The eagerly-awaited Ryman Premier derby clash between Eastleigh and Salisbury City at the Sparshatts Stadium was another victim of the cold weather.

Both sides waited at the ground for an hour after the scheduled high noon kick off to see if the pitch would thaw enough to let the game start, but the referee finally postponed it at 1pm.

Eastleigh manager Paul Doswell then held a light training session with his players while Salisbury's temporary manager Mitch Blake said: "We gave it every chance but the ground near the stand was like concrete and it was the right decision to call the game off."

The game has been re-arranged for Wednesday February 16 (7.45 pm).
