IT'S been a shocking year for Saints on and off the field.
And nothing illustrates the on-field struggles more than the graphic above showing Premiership teams' results since Boxing Day 2003.
In the 12 months between then and now, Saints have only picked up 34 points from 39 league matches - relegation form in other words.
Amazingly, they have picked up ten points fewer than any other club barring the three who went down last May and the three who came up in their place - with the exception of Blackburn.
Worryingly, and this illustrates the task facing Harry Redknapp and Jim Smith more than anything, is the fact that only seven of those 39 games have been won.
Saints, to put it bluntly, have forgotten how to win.
Of those seven victories, two were against Leeds and Wolves, who ended up being relegated, and one was a last-minute penalty winner against Blackburn.
In fact, if Saints don't pick up points against Charlton and Liverpool, 2004 could turn out to be the worst year for results since the club won promotion to the top flight in 1978.
At the moment Saints have just 34 points from 37 matches in 2004.
The worst year for results since promotion under Lawrie McMenemy was in 1996 when Saints picked up just 35 points from 38 games under first Dave Merrington and then Graeme Souness.
In 1998, under Dave Jones, they picked up just 38 in 37 games.
