DOCTORS today issued advice about dealing with a winter bug which led to the closure of six wards at Southampton General Hospital and Winchester's Royal Hampshire County Hospital.
The Norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea, is nasty but short-lived and can be treated at home.
Southampton GP Dr David Paynton said: "People should be reassured it is not something they need to be worried about and there is no need to see a doctor. You should keep warm and take plenty of fluids.
"Over the counter treatments can also be used to help relieve the symptoms."
In most cases, the bug lasts between one and two days. Anyone who comes down with the virus can call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 to find out when pharmacies are open.
