The Firebird, New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth
THE Firebird is a magical fairy tale with a twist - a beautiful princess, a brave prince and, just for comedy value, a singing and dancing toothless wolf.
Just six actors and actresses graced the stage at New Theatre Royal and each sang, played instruments and took on several characters.
The songs were catchy and the kids could sing along, but the powerful voice of Princess Vasilisa, played by Vikki Stone, stood head and shoulders above the rest and proved that this was not just a children's pantomime.
The costumes sparkled, the firebird glimmered and everyone laughed at the hut with the chicken legs while the play had just a hint of panto to keep the kids pointing and booing in their seats.
There was not a trace of tinsel to be found and the Russian folktale offered light relief from the Christmas overkill.
Best of all, there was a happy ending that never fails to delight - the prince gets his girl and the evil sorcerer cops it.
The Firebird runs until January 1. Box office on 023 9264 9000.
