THE biggest archaeological excavation in ten years has got under way in Winchester in the hunt for the city's medieval streets.
The dig, on the site of Northgate House in Staple Gardens, is being done in preparation for a redevelopment of the site.
Already work on the front part next to the road, which in medieval times was called Brudenestret, has revealed a complex sequence of floors and walls, showing evidence of the layout and character of homes dating back to at least 1110.
The dig is being undertaken by archaeologists from Oxford and is due to be finished in mid-January.
