A VANDAL armed with a saw has ruined the highlight of Winchester's festive decorations by cutting down the city's Christmas tree.
The 30ft pine in the centre of Winchester High Street was attacked in the early hours of this morning and left lying on its side with its baubles strewn across the pavement.
The culprit sawed through the trunk of the tree shortly before 1am today. Police investigating the attack are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward and contact Winchester crimedesk on 0845 045 4545.
Cllr Brian Collin, Winchester City Council's portfolio holder for crime and disorder, said: "It's a shame that someone has chosen to ruin the city's main focal point for the Christmas decorations."
