NEW BOSS Danny Bowers led happy Hamble ASSC to a shock fourth round 2-0 victory at AFC Totton last night to book a place in the quarter-finals of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup.

Totton went into the tie on an awesome 11-game unbeaten league run, yet they barely got a sniff of a chance against the revitalised Planemakers, who floored them with two first-half goals.

Former Totton midfielder Michael White struck the first blow against his old club after 14 minutes and Matt Flynn got the second shortly before half-time.

At the other end, Hamble keeper Ben Shawyer - another former Totton player - was rarely troubled on an off-night for Stuart Ritchie's Stags.

"It was fantastic," grinned Bowers. "We came here and played really well against a good Wessex League side.

"We matched them in every department and Totton didn't have a shot on goal."

Hamble hadn't previously won since knocking Shaftesbury out of the League Cup three weeks ago. Ironically their last league win was against Totton in October.

The Planemakers will entertain last night's other surprise packages Poole Town.

The Division 2 title chasers eclipsed top-flight outfit Wimborne 2-1 at The Cuthbury - a real feather in the cap of Dolphins' manager Tom Killick and his sidekick Taffy Richardson, who won the FA Vase with the Magpies in 1992.

What's more, Poole did it the hard way. Having taken the lead through Dave Sturgess and missed chances to extend it, they had frontman Aaron Turner sent off.

Wimborne capitalised with a Stuart Cannie leveller, but Gary Funnell's trickery earned Poole a penalty which he got up and converted himself.

"I've been telling everyone what a good side we are, but we don't always show it," said Killick.

"We lost to another Division 1 side Hamworthy in the Dorset Senior Cup, so I desperately wanted us to do ourselves justice tonight and I think we did."

The night's longest tie was at Portsmouth Road where VT FC were sunk 3-1 by Gosport Borough after extra-time.

Much to the amazement of VT boss Dave Diaper, the Boatmen collected nine bookings and had goalscorer Mike Spinney sent off towards the end of normal time for a second yellow.

Spinney gave VT a flying start, but Abs N'Doye levelled before John Cripps and Graham Lindsey fired Borough through in extra-time.

"We made hard work of it but, without making excuses, we had six out again tonight," reflected Gosport's assistant manager Gary Lee. "The players been dropping like flies."

VT have also been plagued by injury. Having used all three subs, they finished last night's tie with nine men after losing Ben Tyrrell to hamstring trouble.

Gosport's neighbours Fareham are also through to the last eight after ousting BAT 1-0 at Cams Alders.

The winner came four minutes from time when Danny Boyle released substitute Peter Wood for a typically flamboyant finish, booking Town a home tie against Hamworthy United.

Holders Winchester City had to surrender home advantage to Moneyfields because of a problem with the showers at the Denplan City Ground.

It made no difference to the result, however - Neil Hards's men running out 5-1 winners after Moneyfields had Nicky Wyatt dismissed for two bookable offences.

City were leading 2-1 when Wyatt departed - Ian Mancey and Mark Jones sandwiching goals around Dave Neill's effort for the Money men.

Substitute Liam Green scored twice in the last 20 minutes along with one from Jamie Musselwhite.

Christchurch won their third round tie 3-0 against Fawley AFC courtesy of James Bailey-Pearce (2) and Danny Stone. Priory now visit Thatcham.

Revised quarter-final draw: Fareham Town v Hamworthy Utd, Gosport Borough v Romsey Town or AFC Newbury/Lymington & New Milton, Hamble ASSC v Poole Town, Winchester City v Thatcham Town or Christchurch.
