HARRY REDKNAPP wants to bring right-hand man Jim Smith to St Mary's.

The new Saints manager yesterday secured the services of former Portsmouth first-team coach Kevin Bond and now wants to add Smith, left, to the new-look managerial team.

Smith, 64, quit Pompey with Redknapp two weeks ago and both are keen to bring their successful partnership to Saints.

"Jim wants to join, he's desperate to join me and I'd like him to come here," said Redknapp.

"I will speak to Jim when he gets back from Dubai. We were supposed to be going on holiday together with our wives. My wife paid for it early on Monday morning - and I got a call about this job an hour later.

"I have lost my money on the holiday but Jim has still gone but he wants to get back into football and I will speak to him when he gets back."

Bond was yesterday unveiled as Saints' new first-team coach and further changes to the managerial structure look certain following the departure of Steve Wigley.

"Kevin's a good coach, I trust him and I've known him a long time," said Redknapp.

"I brought him back into football at Portsmouth and him and Jim were my first two signings and they were my best two signings. They were both brilliant.

"Kevin's an ex-Southampton player, he still lives in the area and it's good for Kevin too. I would imagine there's every chance of the three of us linking up again."

Chairman Rupert Lowe said: "Kevin Bond will be joining our coaching staff to work with Harry.

"Harry wants to bring in his own man, which is fair enough, and we have no plans right now to change any other staff."

Christian Damiano, who has only been at Saints for two months, and Dennis Rofe remain part of the coaching staff for now - and Saints have still NOT given up hope of persuading Wigley to stay on in some sort of role.

But it looks difficult to retain everyone, especially if Smith does make the expected move to Saints.

It is thought that club stalwart Rofe will definitely stay on in some sort of capacity and he may work alongside Redknapp, Smith and Bond, as Joe Jordan did at Pompey.

Saints have yet to fill the job of chief scout following Ray Clarke's move to Newcastle and that vacancy could conceivably come into the equation.

Former Weymouth boss Stuart Morgan was chief scout at Pompey under Redknapp.

Stewart Henderson remains reserve team manager, although the overall picture is not expected to become clear until next week.
