A GOLFING team from Hedge End-based builders Drew Smith has just won The Times Corporate Golf Challenge in record-breaking fashion at La Manga in Spain.
Jamie Pinchon, Gary Smith, Andy Doswell and Neale Foulkes, all members of the Stoneham club, beat off the challenge of 16 other teams to make the world final in Spain next summer.
Drew Smith founding director and team captain Gary Smith led his team to a score of 235 under the Stableford system, with the best three scores from four counting on each hole.
Times golf writer Gary Jacob described the score as "extraordinary in any circumstances and one of the highest in the 11-year history of the competition".
Smith and the rest of his team - chairman Doswell, finance director Foulkes and former county player Pinchon from Southampton structural engineers Steve Penfold Associates - were not afraid of taking on some brave shots to gain their victory.
"It was tense at the start in front of the TV cameras from Sky Sports but we began as we meant to continue and that saw us through," said Smith. "It was a good all-round team performance."
You can see for yourself just how well the team played - Sky will be broadcasting the event over December 13 and 14.
