Sir.-I totally agree with the recent letter from Matt Dillon regarding "Objection to shop music".
When I worked in retail I was always told that background music should be "in the background" and should only be non-vocal so as not to be distracting to shoppers.
It seems that retail companies believe the customer has to be constantly bombarded with this intolerable cacophony of noise, whether shopping or dining out.
Some outlets are worse than others. I had to walk out of one store without making a purchase, simply because I couldn't concentrate.
Let's hope that customer power will do something to reduce the earache which, in turn, could well increase sales
