A CAMPAIGN to reduce the number of cars on the school run in Eastleigh has reached another milestone.
Twenty schools have now drawn up a travel plan.
Shamblehurst Primary School in Wildern Lane, Hedge End, is the latest to put the wheels in motion to encourage more pupils to cycle to school.
Created by a working group of pupils, parents, school governors and staff with the help of Eastleigh Council's engineering unit, the Shamblehurst plan has highlighted that half of the 470 youngsters currently travel to school by car.
The blueprint has also revealed that parents and pupils would walk if it was safer to do so and that youngsters are keen to cycle - if cycle routes could be improved.
Proposals which will be worked on and developed over the coming months include updating and extending cycle storage at the school, providing separate school accesses for cars, pedestrians and bikes plus the opportunity for all pupils to get cycle proficiency training.
A "walking bus" scheme will also be investigated.
Civic chiefs claim that schools which have adopted travel plans have seen fewer cars on the school run.
