SNOWMEN, reindeers and stars bathed Hythe with festive cheer as former Saints soccer star Francis Benali switched on the Christmas lights.
Thousands of residents turned out to watch the ex-Southampton defender plunge the village into the Yuletide season.
However, when the sleigh bells were ringing this year it was in alarm - as Santa Claus got "stuck" on the Waitrose roof.
The portly present provider was rescued by Hythe firefighters after pretending to assembled crowds his sleigh had broken down.
The well-attended event was compered by Denis Bundy. Earlier in the day youngsters and their parents had inspected a vintage fire engine, which Hythe and Dibden Fire Preservation Society were exhibiting to raise money for its upkeep.
Other attractions included bouncy castles and roundabouts while Father Christmas wandered. Charities to benefit from the event include Families Matter, the Handy Trust and Marcella House.
