Nora White has led an eventful life during the past century. Miss White, who was born in County Water-ford, Ireland, in 1904 celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday at Andover Nursing Home surrounded by relatives who had travelled from as far away as Ontario, Canada to be at her side.
Nora arrived in London to train as a nurse in 1924. She came to Andover in 1938 after having travelled the world working in both Australia and America.
Having qualified as a nurse she acted as a health visitor in Andover until her retirement in the 1960s when she became matron at Red Rice School.
During the outbreak of the Second World War she was one of those who travelled to the Channel Islands to rescue more than 200 children from invading German forces in 1940.
Later she helped some of the children evacuated to Andover from London.
He nephew and Godson, Bruce Burton, from Ontario, said: "She is a very special aunt and I decided to make a special journey over here to be with her on her 100th birthday.
She has been a well known face in Andover and there must be many people in the town who met Nora when they were babies. "She is still very well but being aged 100 she doesn't run around like she used to."
