APPRENTICESHIPS are established qualifications that you can trust.
Unlike many other training courses, apprenticeships ensure that young people have the practical skills to do the job. And because training is carried out on the job, employers can also make sure their apprentices learn the skills that work best for their particular business.
The Learning and Skills Council contracts various companies to deliver training in different sectors.
Key Training provides apprenticeships in business, administration, customer service, IT, team leading and management.
Monica Lubbock-Smith, account manager for Key Training at View Point House, Basing View, Basingstoke, said: "We work with employers to enhance, develop and refresh the skills they need from their employees."
What can you expect as an apprentice?
Apprenticeships are available to young people under the age of 25.
If you have left college or school, are already in a job or are looking for work, an apprenticeship could be right for you.
You can expect:
- a paid job
- your own dedicated tutor who will support you throughout the qualification
- training on the job
- individual training and assessment
- planned career progression
- a nationally-recognised qualification
- an NVQ, relevant key skills and a technical certificate
- the opportunity to progress to an advanced apprenticeship, a degree and other professional qualifications.
Kiran Sheemar, account administrator for G-Tec Information Solutions in Coronation Road, Basingstoke, said: "Key Training has helped me develop many computer and communication skills.
"I first joined in 1999, after I had left school, and since then have completed several qualifications."
Laura Edwards, from Overton, carried out her apprenticeship with Resource Consulting in Houndmills, Basingstoke.
She said: "I completed an apprenticeship in business administration through Key Training. It gave me vital skills that I could use in the workplace and that benefited both me and the company for which I worked."
What can you expect as an employer?
Apprenticeships allow you to invest in your firm's future. They are designed by companies in your sector to meet the needs of your business.
This means the training is always relevant and it is tailored to the individual needs of your sector.
You can expect:
- subsidised training
- support in developing essential skills for the work environment
- regular reviews on progress
- motivated people who are keen to learn
- easier recruitment and retention of able young people
- avoidance of skills shortages
- specialist skills that allow you to keep abreast of new technology.
- Suzanne Astbury, HR manager of Scottish and Southern in Winchester Road, Basingstoke, said: "I believe the students have benefited from the NVQ.
"All of the students now have a more professional approach to our customers."
