FORMER England cricket captain David Gower has struck a blow for health charity Wessex Heartbeat.

The ex-Hampshire star put his weight behind a project to demolish two houses near the charity's Wessex Cardiac Centre in Southampton.

The site is to be redeveloped into accommodation for relatives of patients undergoing heart treatment.

Developer Rok is building the block in Tremona Road.

Alan Blair, chief executive of Wessex Heartbeat, said: "The existing house has been a vital part of the care offered by the Wessex Card-iac Centre and has been home to more than 6,500 people.

"The expansion is absolutely vital to enable us to cope with the ever-increasing numbers of patients who require the specialist care offered by the Wessex Cardiac Centre.

"We are hugely grateful to Rok and to all the other companies who are helping us to achieve our goal."
