GORDON Strachan has ruled out what would be a popular return to Saints.

It had been rumoured that the man who guided Saints to the FA Cup final and their highest Premiership position was set for a sensational comeback in a director of football role.

But the Scot, while wishing not to be quoted for fear of undermining Steve Wigley, is still enjoying a first break from football in 30 years and has given his backing to the Saints head coach and his former colleague.

Saints today made it clear Strachan would not be returning in the short-term.

Indeed, it is understood that the 47-year-old has no immediate plans to return to football management anywhere.

A section of fans are campaigning for Strachan to return and are petitioning chairman Rupert Lowe to make an approach to him.

Strachan watched from the stands as Saints drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace - but Wigley was well aware of his presence and the two shared a cup of tea and a chat after the match.

And, contrary to rumours, Strachan did not enter the dressing-room or speak to any of the players after the match.

He is keen not to do anything that could undermine Wigley, who is a good friend.

Strachan departed Saints in February after bringing forward his plans for a break amid incessant speculation about his future when Saints almost brought in Glenn Hoddle as his replacement.

However, Strachan has not ruled out returning to Saints one day.

For now, Saints are supporting under-fire boss Wigley.

Results have been poor, but the head coach has the backing of the players and the chairman after guiding the team through some of the most trying set of circumstances imaginable and a horrendous run of injuries.
