PALMERSTON - whitewashed by Victory in the Hampshire League - suffered the same fate when they faced the Portsmouth club in the Drake and Fletcher Honda (Ashford) Top Ten Classic 24 hours later.

This time Victory triumphed 82-53 to take all 15 points, although in two of the rubbers the Fareham men came so close to a tangible reward.

In the singles, Russell Gadd was pipped 21-20 by Peter Hobday and the pairs ended with a 14-13 defeat for Bill Jackson and Tony Grant by Liberty Trophy duo Colin Thresher and Richard Shelley.

There were heavier defeats for Neil O'Donovan (fours, 26-10 against Colin Hayward) and Andy McKain (triples, 31-10 against Steve Robertson).

Atherley fell foul of the formidable Teignbridge club 51-28 in the EIBA under-25 double rink championship.
