PLANS for a concert by chart-topping rock band Oasis at Hampshire's Rose Bowl stadium next year are already upsetting neighbours.

Council chiefs have revealed that bosses at the venue have yet to ask for planning permission for the gig to go ahead.

The concert is due to be held on July 6 next summer, as revealed in later editions of yesterday's Daily Echo.

Just last year ago, Hampshire cricket bosses caused a storm among West End residents after selling tickets for a musical weekend featuring pop act Blue before they had council permission to hold the event.

Nearby residents and local councillors set up the Rose Bowl Liaison Panel with members of the club's management to address issues of noise and traffic problems created by large events and international cricket matches at the ground.

Panel member Sarah Turl is chairman of the Moorgreen Road Residents' Association.

"Local people will be upset to see more pop concerts," she said.

"Unless it's handled in the right way, then it is not a suitable site for these events because there is such a lack of parking."

During previous events that brought in large crowds to the ground, roads in West End were congested with parked cars and coaches.

"The club needs to reassure the residents of West End that they can quell the problems of the past."

Hosting music events was not part of the original planning permission when the ground was first built in Botley Road four years ago.

In order for the concert to go ahead, the cricket club must get permission from the council and receive a public entertainment licence regarding the level of noise from the concert.

A spokesman for Hampshire County Council said: "We are working with the club and anticipate they will submit a planning application asking consent for the ground to be used for a concert."

"Currently there is no planning consent for use of the facilities for concerts, and the council has expressed concern about noise and traffic at previous events."

No one from The Rose Bowl was available for comment.

Oasis, who stormed the music charts with such hits as Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger, have added Hampshire's County Cricket ground to their stadium tour next summer after selling out all other venues.

Tickets for the concert go on sale on Saturday, and are available from www.oasisnet.com and www.ticketmaster.co.uk. They cost £32.50 each and are not available from the cricket club.
