England youth team member Lee Cullen from Netley romped to victory during the Weymouth Echo Open along the Ferry Bridge section of Chesil beach where dogfish garfish and poor cod supplied most action.

Cullen opted for the long hike to the Boundary Stone section where he beached his limit 12 doggies and 12 garfish along with poor cod weighing just over a 25lb total to collect the £200 top prize plus another £60 in pools.

Runner-up among 60 competitors was local ace Ben Stockley, with 22lb, followed by Dace Chedzoye, with 21lb.

The penultimate round of the Gale Force League at West Bexington saw dogfish, whiting, sole and poor cod. League organiser Pete Hegg won A section with 14lb 12oz, followed by Dave Lane (10lb 15oz) and John Van Crugden (10lb 2oz). Paul Phillips won B section with 16lb 1.5oz from Martin Hegg 11lb 3.75oz and Dave Chedzoye 9lb 14.5oz.

Final match in the series will be at Abbotsbury on December 17 (8pm to midnight).

A 15lb 6oz cod was caught by Ian Fooks, tackling the deep water mark at Hurst Castle during a night session. Fooks, a 29-year-old fitter from New Milton, used a while squid presented on a 4/0 pennel to tempt the personal best specimen during the early flood. He also landed pouting up to 1lb 8oz, doggies and a 4lb bass.

The penultimate round of the Isac pegged open league at Hayling saw local anglers figure, while travelling angler Joe Arch secured his stranglehold on the overall leader table.

Darren Phillips, a member of the victorious England team at the recent world championship in Weymouth, romped to victory with a mixed catch of 7lb 7.5oz. England youth team member Daniel Mogridge from Fareham was second with 3lb 1.25oz and Mike Kempster had 1lb 12.25oz.

The event attracted 68 competitors, 52 weighing in one bass, one dogfish, two flounders, five pollack, 54 pollack, one silver eel, one sole and 79 whiting.

Other prize money winners: A section: 1 Chris Equall 1lb 1oz, 3 Paul Phillips 1lb, 4 Colin Carey 13.25oz. B section: 2 Joe Arch 2lb 9.75oz, 3 Phil Parkin 1lb 14.5oz, 4 Paul Stevens 1lb 10.75oz. C section: 2 Alan Gilbert 6lb 12.75oz, 3 Mark Plowman 3lb 13.75oz, 4 John Van Crugten 3lb 10oz.

Joe Arch heads the overall leader table with 18 points followed by Ian Golds 43, Alan Gilbert and England youth team member Lee Cullen, both 47.

Final match in the pegged open series will be at Stokes bay on December 11 (fishing 6pm to 11pm). Whiting and pout are expected to dominate although the odd codling could also put in an appearance. Tickets are pre-book. Trevor Sutch has details (023 9220 1696).

A senior Wessex Flounder League fixture at Baiter attracted 60 competitors with Cliff Bland taking the £71 top prize with four flatties weighing 6lb 4.5oz followed by Tony Wright 3lb 7oz and Simon Voller with 2lb 14oz.

Simon Barber (Wessex Angling), sponsors the league, beached a 2lb 10.5oz specimen flounder to finish fourth overall as well as collect £60 for the heaviest fish.

Sunday, December 12 will see two open Xmas Fayre shore competition worth checking out. The Lymington club is staging an event around the Lymington & Pennington sea wall (fishing 9am to 2pm). In the evening the joint clubs open, hosted by Boscombe & Southbourne SFC, will be held between Boscombe Pier and Southbourne (fishing 4pm to 9pm).

The annual Lymington Flounder open, traditionally the curtain raiser of the new season has been set for January 2 (fishing 11am to 4pm).
