Sir.-I read in last Friday's Gazette what I believe to be misdirected thoughts within Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council that Basingstoke should apply for city status.
Would I have been alone in nearly falling off my chair with disbelief?
The well-worn phrase "ideas beyond their station", coupled with our own Prince Charles' recent expressions regarding aiming too high without the necessary qualifications, would seem to fit well enough.
If people base any "city" submission upon the number of roundabouts within the town, then they might stand a chance.
Then, of course, there's always the possibility that the growing monstrosities of multi-storied blocks of flats may somehow be seen as edifice to be proud of.
Basingstoke as a city - how utterly ridiculous!
