VOLVO Cars North America (VCNA) has been showing off concept versions of the XC90, S40 and V50 at an aftermarket equipment show in Las Vegas.

The XC90 PUV (Power Utility Vehicle) has been tuned and super-charged to produce an estimated 650bhp from its V8 engine.

Several stylistic changes have been made to the XC90 (pictured right) such as a garish red paint scheme, lowered suspension, wide alloy wheels, deep front spoiler and four custom-made exhaust pipes.

The humble S40's makeover was carried out by Evolve Cars Inc, of Southern California.

Its custom-built body kit and trim are designed to aid airflow to the T5 2.5-litre engine under the bonnet, which has been fitted with a larger turbo to produce around 400bhp.

Other modifications include a set of 19-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch dual exhaust system, Formula One-style pushrod rear suspension and some high-performance brakes.

Finally, the V50 SV (Special Vehicle), which has been developed by the firm's Special Vehicles team in Gothenburg, is designed to appeal to a younger generation of motorist.

Exterior styling takes its cue from the forthcoming Sport model and even uses some of the production car's kit - the 18-inch wheels, for example.

The V70 R's turbo engine is used alongside a six-speed manual gearbox and has been modified to produce 340bhp.

"This was such a fun concept," said Vic Doolan, president and CEO of VCNA.

"It has all the safety that Volvo is known for but with the looks and performance of an exotic sports car.

"But this is just a concept to get Volvo noticed by those who may not have considered one before."
