SNOW White and John Travolta seem worlds apart but thanks to some innovative thinking by Hamble Players, our famous fairytale heroine gets a seventies style makeover for the group's pantomime.
Along with her Seven Dwarfs, played by two sets of local children ranging in age from seven to 14 years, this panto boasts all the traditional characters and qualities mixed with some excellent disco-favourite songs from the seventies era including Night Fever, Disco Inferno and You're the One that I Want from Grease.
The show is directed by David Humphries.
Though an accomplished director of musicals, this is David's first attempt at directing a pantomime.
He says: "I was a teenager in the seventies and loved the music. I thought it would be a refreshing change to put in pop songs in the show to offer a mix of modern along with the traditional ingredients we all love and expect in panto. Snow White was one of my favourite stories as a kid so I am delighted to get the chance to direct it this year for the Hamble Players."
This panto version tells the story of the beautiful Princess Snow White (Natalie Baker).
Her wicked stepmother Queen Evilena ( Lyn Bentley) is racked with jealousy as she endures, in an age without wrinkle cream or Botox, the incessant reminders from the Magic Mirror (Tragic Mirror in her case!) that there is another more beautiful than she.
So she despatches Snow White to her death in the woods.
Here Snow White meets the Dwarfs, plus a Terrible Troll, and of course eventually her Prince to live happily ever after.
Hamble-le-Rice Memorial Hall. Wednesday to Sunday December 5. Tickets: £6.50. Box office: 01489 574915.
